THE BELL WITCH COTTAGE AND CAVE I know you said chose one house or building, but the cave is a big factor in the story. The story of the bell witch haunting is decades old. The story goes that the Bell family, who lived near Tennessee in a little cottage far away from civilisation, were terrorized by a ghost. The hauntings became more severe as time went on. An account of a particularly nasty one which happened one night in mid-winter was recorded a number of years later by the Bells son. He said that he witnessed chairs flying across the room, mad cackling laughter coming out of no-where and even his teenage sister Betsy jerking from side to side as though being slapped, and it also used to pull her hair, and John reveals that his sister was the most picked on by the ghost. That is most probably where the tale that teenagers are more prone to experiencing ghostly goings on than adults are. After that night the Bell family were left traumatized. There were several small hauntings in the cottage after that, all leading up to John Bells sudden, premature death a while later. He is said to have been poisoned.
At John Bells funeral, Betsy Bell was said to have been able to hear the ghosts mad cackling, drowning out the words of the priest, though no one else could hear anything but the priest speaking. It seemed the Bells had their own personal poltergeist.
The family took action after this. They conducted a séance, which is a ceremony like Ouija board that is used to gain contact with spirits. The Bell witch told them her name was Kate Batt, and that she lived in a cave about a mile away. After this, she said she'd leave, but warned she would return in seven years, which she did, to John Bell Jr (Son of the Bells), and told him of the termoil she had put the family through.
The cave was searched, and there was no sign of any Bell Witch.
But, near the Bell Witch cave as it’s know as now, there was, and still is a graveyard. And in that graveyard there is a gravestone that says the name ‘Kate Batt’ on it.
Years later, people who had heard this legend went in search for the grave to uncover evidence to suggest that the story is true. They found Kate Batts grave and began to dig it up the grave, and you’ll never guess what they found. They found Kate Batts bones, all perfectly preserved, and they found that the skeleton was laid out in a skull and cross-bones shape. Was that a sign that the Bell Witch was really a restless spirit.
Some people try to say that the story isn’t true, and that Betsy Bell made the whole thing up for attention, but then how do we explain John Bells death and the results of the séance. Personally, I believe that the Bells were truly haunted by a restless spirit.

This is the Bell Witch Cottage, where the hauntings are said to have taken place.
