SIGN LANGUAGE

Although possibly difficult to teach here on the site, I thought we could add this as I am in the process of trying to learn sign language myself, so perhaps we could all learn together.

I will try to add some helpfull classes in this thread, though please feel free to add posts here to help out.

I am pretty sure sign language is the same throughout the world, though if you notice thatsomething ere is different from what you know then please feel free to add your own input

Possibly the easiest place to start is with letters;

Lesson 1: The Alphabet

Certain letter involve movement of some kind or another which i have tried to illustrate above

Now we shall move onto some basic words. You can practice these at home and feel free to put a video link of you doing them in the conversation thread in the other language subforum, or simply use these or other images to strike up conversation there

Family

Mother/Mum

Place the thumb of your right hand against your chin. Your hand
should be open, in a "five shape."

Father/Dad

Place the thumb of your right hand against your forehead. Your hand
should be open.

Brother

Sister

Grandmother

Touch your chin with your thumb on your right hand as in diagram then move your hand forward in two small arches.

Grandfather

Touch your forehead with the thumb of your right hand, then move your hand forward in two small arches.

Aunt

Shape the right hand to form the letter A. Hold your hand close to your right cheek and shake your hand slightly back and forth at the wrist

Uncle

Shape your right hand to form the
letter "U." then hold your hand close to your right temple and from the wrist, shake your hand slightly back and forth.

Baby

I noticed differences to the one that I know. I haven't seen exactly which ones are different, but I will edit this post with details.

PostSubject: Re: SIGN LANGUAGE   Mon Apr 29 2013, 19:02

I must tell you that sign language is NOT the same throughout the world. In fact, even in English to English speaking countries (Such as England and America) the signs are different. Quite drastically in fact. The alphabet listed here is the ASL or American Sign Language alphabet, whereas the days of the week are in British Sign Language, or BSL.

I have been working as a certified ASL interpreter for 25 years and have a Deaf sister, both parents, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. Thinking sign language is universal is a common misconception. I just wanted to clear that up.

Thanks!
