Instructions:

You are all within a large hot air balloon (a muggle flying machine) over the vast sea. There is no land around for many miles and the balloon is sinking fast. You all realise that either you all sink into the depths of the water, or one person wil have to be pushed over the edge to save the rest.

It is your job to debate with the others why you think that you should stay in the
balloon and not be pushed out. Use your profession as an argument and
knowledge of other professions to try to state your case.

Points:

There will be a maximum of 100 points per person for this debate

Ginny fretted as she looked over the hot air balloon at the churning sea below. She didn't like this, heights were not her friend. Neither was the fear of drowning. What was the name of that phobia? The important thing was, she did not want to die. They had all just realized that one of them would have to be pushed into the sea below, or they would all sink into the water.

"I shouldn't be pushed." she started. "Because I am a profession of respect. I'm a doctor, for goodness sakes. I've gone to school for many years to obtain a degree that allows me to help people. Why would you kick me out if all I do is help people?"

Stephy looked out over the basket and down towards the water that they were slowly getting closer to. She just recieved the news that one of them was going to have to be thrown overboard and even though she could swim she wouldnt be able to last long in the water. Off to her side she heard Ginny say about her being a doctor.

"I'm a Mathematician. You guys might need me later on. You can't push me over board either. I could do some math and maybe slow down the descent of the balloon to give us some more time to decide" Stephy shouted out as she pulled out a tiny notebook and pencil from her robes pocket and started to write down some numbers

Violet looked over the side, afraid."You cant push me over, I might not be much, but I am a queen and I do have complete control over a country. Without me, there will be war between our families." Violet said, wondering if the others had a good idea.

Emmalynn glanced over the edge of the basket. She turned to the rest of its occupants and gulped.

"Y'know, if we ever land somewhere, like an island or something, I would be the only one with the experience in building. I could build shelters, houses, things that would be essential to survive. I think I'm a pretty good asset here," she explained to the others.

Gemma was trying hard to think of the reason she was here for. However, she didn't know, all she knew was that she ended up up here and know she had been told that one of them would have to die if the others were to survive. She gulped, intent on forgetting about her bad case of acrophobia and instead thinking of a better reason than the others had as to why she could not be the one who was to die.

Listening to the others' points, she did feel at loss, so she went with answering their words first.

"Ginny, I think being a doctor is a very good reason for needing to stay in here, and if I were to decide, I would never have you die, as you might be the most useful one for us. And Emmalynn, I consider your reason very well-thought-off too, but then again, there doesn't seem to be an island close by, or else we could just land on that. So while you could be useful, it might not be as much of a mistake to throw you out. As to you, Stephy and Violet, I have to say I am not sure of whether you have good reasons for staying alive alongside us others. I mean, usefulness is of most importance in situations like this, but I seriously don't believe that Maths is going to help us now. Or ever, actaually. Because even if someone isn't useful right now, they could be useful afterwards. Which is why I probably wouldn't make you die, Violet. Killing a queen is not exactly something to affirm the peace in this world, after all."

Breathing deeply after her long speech, an idea formed in her mind and she went on right away:

"And this is where I consider myself as coming into play: No matter whom we are going to throw out, we definitely are going to kill someone, and in my position in the police department, I could help with the inquiries. I could convince the officers whose case this will be that it was but an accident, so that we will all be not only alive, but also without penalties keeping us from living freely. Doesn't that sound important? Or would you rather stay alive just to live in jail soon?"

Katie joined the others at the side of the basket. Maybe this trip wasn't such a good idea after all. They seemed to be falling pretty fast and she was definetly not jumping. After listening to all the other's arugemnts she was thinking that the Queen should go, anyone but her.

"Listen up! As a cook I can take almost anything and make it edible and tasty too! After a few days of being starnded up here you're going to wish you had food and thats where I come in. I can turn some of the things we do have into food so that we can survive until we see land again."

She trembled as each of them spoke. They all had their own reasons for living as well. Stephy claimed she could slow a descent. But how, without any other instruments besides her paper and pen? Violet is the queen, so killing her would not be good for them if they landed anywhere near England. Emmalynn, as a carpenter, could build them a shelter if they ever landed anywhere. And there was that if. She couldn't see any islands in sight, so she might not end up being useful at all. And then there was Gemma, the police officer. She affirmed all of Ginny's beliefs about the others, and said that hse herself could ensure the survivors' safety after they had gotten safely home...and after they'd killed a companion.

"I'm agree with your points Gemma, whole-heartedly." She looked guiltily at Stephy and Emmalynn and muttered an apology. "And I do think that you have a point about being able to convince people that it was necessary for us to...remove a person from our balloon...but isn't that covered in law anyways? 'Self Defense'? I mean, sure you would help..." she bit her lip, determined to stop. She should not antagonize someone who thought she should live. "Anyway, I'd like to add a few more points as to my usefulness. I can heal us if one of us gets ill. I'm also partially trained in psychiatry, so, if need be, I can calm us down in times of calamity."

Ginny then realized that, rudely, she had ignored Katie's arrival. "Well, like is the case of Emmalynn, you would be very helpful if we landed somewhere. If. Right now we don't have much for food..."

Raistlin watched rather amused all others fighting for a stay in the balloon. He was a Treasure Hunter he lived for situations like that. Finally he decided to talk.

"Well, well m'dears. Being a treasure Hunter I experienced a lot of dangerous situations so not only I am your best choice of surviving as I also know how to cook, some medical knowledge, techniques of how to survive in different envrionments. Tell me what are you gonna do if a storm comes up?"

He waited a little to pull out a question which was definetly going to disturb the others.

"On another note. When we do finally come to a conclusion on how should be thrown out what happens if that person refuses? Are you willing to push that person yourselves? Are you willing to have that murder on your conscience. I had to kill before in my quests. My instinct of survivance is stronger than anything I am also willing to relieve you of your burden when we reach a conclusion if that person refuses to jump I'll make sure that person does."

Katie was outrages at Ginny's response. "Well, Ginny, that's exactly th point. I could take some of the straw from this basket and make it into something edible. Same with the little possession we all do have." she finished.

Katie thought about what Raistlin had said. The did seem to have experience to carry them over and she wouldn't want to fight him in a hot air balloon. She would have to think more carefully about this.

Listening to what Katie, the cook, said about herself and which points speaking for her the doctor Ginny added, Gemma was calm. Just the part where Ginny spoke about what she herself had said, she was growing nervous. Self-defence. She hadn't exactly thought about that, as her reasoning was a spur-of-the-moment thing, but not that she considered it, she knew that in this case law wouldn't help them, and that she told the others.

"Ginny, I value your agreement with my believes, just you seem to be mistaken about the extent to which the right of self-defence exceeds. We are, up to now, in no situation that is endangering our lives so much that we are rightfully killing somebody. And using euphemisms, like you did, may also not be too helpful. We will not only have removed somebody from the balloon, unless you can ensure that they won't be killed. We will all together have killed somebody, sacrificed him to save our lives while we could neither be sure that we would die nor was that person the one who would have been the reason for our possible death. That is never going to be self-defence in the opinion of a prosecutor or even judge!"

She waited for a reaction from the others, wondering how they, how she herself would feel about surviving only to be locked up soon after. For a lifetime, possibly.

"Furthermore, I well understand your reasoning, Katie, and yours even better, Raistlin. I would strongly disapprove of killing the both of you, therefore."

"Katie, I dont think we should be destroying our basket-which is currently keeping us alive-to eat it would work too well..." she shot back, angry at having been spoken sharply at when she was ao anxious. She purposefully ignored what Rai was saying, she didn't really want to get too close to him. However, as she thought it over some more, it would be helpful to have him around. Maybe they could blame him for going crazy and tossing the person overboard.

"Okay, Gemma. I see your point now. I should stop trying to garner what little of law I know from Law and Order." she chuckled slightly.

Katie was releived after hearing Gemma speak. So relieved in fact that she didn't retort to Ginny. Instad, she focused the attention away from herself and onto the Queen.

"If we all have valid reasons for staying, I think the Queen should go. When are we going to need a Queen to keep us a float?"

Emmalynn, who had recovered from the shock of possibly being thrown off, nodded in agreement with Katie.

"We don't relly need a queen here. The rest of us have valid reasons for staying alive, but a queen, in my opinion, is dead wieght in this situation...." she said slowly.

"I have to disagree with the both of you, Katie and Emmalynn. Of course a queen isn't of much help for us right here and now, but we can be sure that people will find out how she died. And while I might very well be able to prevent our being sentenced, I probably cannot prevent the people from the country she is Queen in from finding out. And having them start a war might be even worse than being locked up in jail, as war might kill all of us and the ones we love, at a point were we just happenend to be relieved to have survived and be reunited with them. Would you really want to risk that? I sure wouldn't, I still think that the Mathematician is least helpful to us. Look at her, sitting there, still doing something. Who's assuring us she isn't just trying to fool us into letting her stay alive? Who's assuring us that she can do anything about our situation even if she actually tries to calculate something useful?"

Gemma looked at the others questioningly, waiting for what they thought of this. She always seemed to talk a lot only to wait afterwards, but it kept her mind off the terrifying height she was exposed to in this tiny, frail basket.
